An initial elevator conversation becomes more useful when it begins with the building rather than a preferred product name. The goal is not to produce a final specification immediately, but to separate known information from questions that still need confirmation.
Start with the building function
Explain whether the building is residential, public, clinical, hospitality, industrial, or mixed-use. The way a building operates affects who will use the elevator, what may need to move, and when circulation is busiest.
Record the movement requirement
Useful early information includes:
- who will use the elevator;
- whether goods, equipment, beds, or service carts may also move;
- the floors that need to be connected;
- any known entrance or circulation constraints;
- the expected operating context.
Gather the available drawings and photos
Plans, sections, site photos, and notes about available space help the team understand the current condition. They do not replace a survey, but they can make the next discussion more precise.
Separate facts from assumptions
Mark which dimensions have been measured, which are taken from drawings, and which still need verification. Final configuration and dimensions should only be confirmed after the relevant project data has been reviewed.
What to bring to the first consultation
Bring the project location, building function, number of floors, expected users, available drawings, and a short description of the movement need. This is enough to begin a structured conversation without inventing technical details too early.
